Most doors have some mechanism or gizmo to keep it closed. If the door needs to be secured to stop access from outside an extra mechanism is normally used.

This can come in various guises. The obvious and most frequent is a slide bolt. This can be pretty labourios entailing cutting out part of the door frame, chiselling bits hear and there or drilling a hole to locate the bolt in the door, essentially damaging a decent door! These can also cause a problem if the door drops due to wear and tear, as then the bolt misses!
